1. Shadrach1 Wooten was born 1739 in Lenoir County, NC and died April 12, 1812 in Columbus County, NC1. He married Elizabeth Allen. She was born in Massachuetts and died 1805 in Lenoir County, NC. Shadrach was buried in Western Prong Baptist Church Cemetery, Columbus County. Elizabeth was buried in Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Sandy Bottom, Lenoir County NC.

2. Thomas2 Box Wooten (Shadrach1) was born February 25, 1783 in Lenoir County and died after 18512. He married 1st Sarah Oliver. She was born June 16, 1785 and died February 9, 1809. He married 2nd Mary Singletary Duhadway June 15, 1809. He married 3rd Margaret McHeoadon October 21, 1846. She was born 1807. He married 4th Martha Haden March 20, 1851. She was born 1802.

3. Shadrach2 Wooten, Jr. (Shadrach1) was born in Lenoir County, NC and died 1845 in Columbus County3. He married Elizabeth Treadwell, daughter of John Treadwell and Ann Dodd. They were buried in Western Prong Baptist Church Cemetery, Columbus County.

He married Sarah Elvira Foscoe, daughter of Nathan and Susan Foscoe, December 27, 1866. She was born April 26, 1842 in NC and died November 9, 1884 in Jones County. They were buried in Trenton Cemetery, Jones County, NC. John married 2nd Lina P. Koonce. She was born 1842 in NC and died 1932.

16. Robert4 Alexander Wooten (Robert3 D., Thomas2 B., Shadrach1) was born April 12, 1854 in NC and died April 14, 1928 in Lenoir County16. He married Emma Parrott. She was born September 3, 1869 and died February 28, 1955 in Lenoir County. He was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Kinston, Lenoir County. She was buried in Westview Cemetery, Kinston, Lenoir County.

She was born April 9, 1867 in Columbus County and died January 22, 1905 in Columbus County. They were buried in the Shipman Cemetery, Columbus County. He married 2nd Burnice Brown, daughter of Burgwyn Brown and Sally High, about 1922

She married John Pickett Council, son of Kinchin Kitchen Council and Catherine Ann Sikes, 1880. They were buried in the Lake Waccamaw Cemetery, Columbus County.

DOCUMENTATION

1. Shadrach Wooten was an Ensign in the Revolutionary War. He marched with Colonel Caswell’s forces and participated in the Battle of Moore’ Creek Bridge, February 27, 1775. [Recollections and Records has his date of birth as 1850.] He purchased 10,ooo acres in Bladen County in 1805. When Columbus County was formed in 1808, Shadrach Wooten was appointed a County Commissioner. He built a store at what in now known as Wooten’s Crossroads. Elizabeth Allen was a teacher. She died a few days before Shadrach moved to Bladen County. In the 1790 Census of Dobbs County, NC, Shadrach was Head of Household, with 2 adult males, 1 male under 16, 3 females and 6 slaves.

2. Thomas Box Wooten settled in Cumberland County, NC. He was 2nd Sgt., 7th Company, Columbus Regiment, War of 1812 (Recollections and Records, page 384). He was listed in the 1820 Census of Bladen County and the 1830 and 1840 Censuses of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC. In the 1850 Census of Cumberland county, Household #1602/1616, he was 68 years old, a farmer with $1,900 of assets.

3. Shadrach Wooten, Jr., was listed in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Censuses of Bladen County. His LW&T, dated August 17, 1845 and probated November 1845, named wife, Elizabeth; sons Shadrach, John A. and Robert; daughters Mary Cromartie, Elizabeth C. Wooten, Charlotte M. Wooten, Ann M. Ashley and Henrietta T. Wooten; brother and Executor, Richard Wooten. [Campbell, 1962.]

4. Richard Wooten represented Columbus County in the North Carolina Assembly several times from 1819 until 1861. He was listed in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 Censuses of Columbus County. His LW&T, dated January 1878 and probated February 2, 1878, gave land to his son Edward W. Wooten. The remainder of his estate was to be divided between his daughters, Narcissa D. Powell and Caroline M. Munroe and the heirs of Eliza J. Peacock, deceased and Elizabeth A. Kelly, deceased.

5. Council and Eliza Wooten were listed in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses of Lenoir County. In 1870 he was listed in Lenoir County. In 1850 he held 19 slaves. In 1860 he held 1771 slaves.

6. Robert Wooten was a Captain in the Confederate Army, Company G, 33rd Infantry [Cumberland Rangers]. He was captured in the Battle of New Bern, NC. Robert and Elizabeth were listed in Cumberland County in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses. He was policeman. In 1870 and 1880 they were listed in Lenoir County. He was a farmer.

 7. Shadrach Wooten, age 19, was listed in the 1850 Census of Bladen County. Shadrach and Sarah E. Wooten were listed in the 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Bladen County. In 1880 and 1900 they were listed in Columbus County. The 1860 Slave Schedule has him holding 22 slaves.

8. John A. and Mary Wooten were listed in the 1850 Census of Bladen County. Mary M. Wooten was listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Censuses of White’s Creek Township, Bladen County. In 1900 she was listed with her son, James, in White’s Creek, Bladen County. The 1860 Slave Schedule has her holding 26 slaves.

9. Albert and Narcissa Powell were listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Columbus County. The 1860 Slave Schedule has him holding 19 slaves.

10. Edward W. and Laney Wooten were listed in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 Censuses of Columbus County.

11.  Albert and Eliza Peacock were listed in the 1870 Census of Columbus County. In 1880 they were listed in Dodge County, GA, where he was in the turpentine business. Albert must have been married previously since Jefferson Davis Peacock was born about 1860 (in VA?) well before he married Eliza.

12. E. M. and Selina W. Foscoe were listed in the 1880 Census of Trenton Township, Jones County, NC

13. John and Elvira F. Wooten were listed in the 1880 Census of Trenton Township, Jones County, NC. In the 1900 Census Jno. W. and Lina K. Wooten were listed in Trenton Township, Jones County, NC.

14. E. Marchett/Edward M. and Mary Herring were listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Censuses of Lenoir County, NC.  In 1930 she was listed in Kinston, Lenoir County, with her brother-in-law, James Herring

16. Robert A. and Emma J. Wooten were listed in the 1910 Census of Vance Township, Lenoir County, NC. In 1920 Robert A. Wooten was listed in Kinston, Lenoir County, age 65, “rents”, while Emma P. Wooten and the children were listed in Vance Township. In the 1930 Census Emma P. Wooten, age 60, widowed, was listed in Vance Township, Lenoir County, NC.

17. Henry J./John H./J. Henry and Ida Wooten were listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Censuses of Columbus County. In 1920 he was age 71, widower, married at 20, in Western Prong Township, Columbus County.

18. Shade G. and Sallie Wooten were listed in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses of Brown Marsh Township, Bladen County. In 1900 he was “High Sheriff”.

19. Wm. D. and Bettie F. Wooten were listed in the 1920 Census of Western Prong Township, Columbus County. In 1930 Bettie Wooten was listed in Western prong Township, Columbus County. She was a “retail merchant, groceries”.

20.  June T. and Rena Wooten were listed in the 1900 Census of Western Prong Township, Columbus County. J. T./June T. and Bernice/Burnace were listed in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Censuses of Western Prong Township, Columbus County.

21. John F. and Kate Wooten were listed in the 1880 Census of French’s Creek, Bladen County. In 1900 they were listed in Greenwood Township, Moore County, NC.
