Lewis Williamson Family

Documentation

1. Numerous land records place Lewis Williamson in Duplin County, in a part that was incorporated into Sampson County in 1784. The first Tax List of Sampson County, dated 1784, lists Lewis Williamson with 300 acres. February 13, 1788 Lewis Williamson was in court to settle a dispute about property lines. Lewis and Mary moved to Bladen County, on the north side of Dunn’s Swamp, near present day Cerro Gordo, Columbus County. His LW&T, dated March 3, 1795, named sons Richard, Lewis, Joshua, Laban and Seth and daughters Rebecca, Nancy, Peggy and Susannah. Lewis was not listed in the 1800 US Census of Bladen County. Mary was listed as Head of Household in 1800 and in the 1810, 1820 and 1830 US Censuses of Columbus County. November 28, 1833 Richard Williamson, the executor of Lewis Williamson’s estate held a public sale. Had Mary died before that date?

2. Mary may have been a Tatum. Lewis’s land holdings in Sampson County were close to those of several Tatum’s, one of whom was Laban Tatum, a Revolutionary War Soldier. Richard Tatum was born before 1740 and died August 1790 in Sampson County. His wife was named Mary. Richard and Mary Tatum had four sons, known from land records of Duplin and Sampson Counties. They were Joshua, Richard, Jr., Jesse and Labon. Richard Tatum, Jr., moved to Bladen County, near Drowning Creek, near Lewis Williamson. Lewis and Mary Williamson named sons Joshua, Richard and Laban Tatum Williamson. Was Mary a daughter of Richard and Mary Tatum?

3. Seth was named in Lewis Williamson’s Last Will and Testament which was dated 1895. However, we have found the name “Seth” in no other documentation of this family. Jason McLeod Williamson has suggested that Seth and Isham were the same person.

4. Labon Tatum Williamson’s Last Will and Testament was dated

5. In the 1830 US Census of Columbus County Margaret was listed with her mother, Mary. In the 1850 US Census she was listed with her sister, Susannah and Ignatius Flowers.

6. Lott Rich, in right of wife Mary, Sampson County, was an heir to Lewis Williamson’s Estate (Jason Williamson, vol. VII, 1990). Names from Bruce Powell’s records in the Fair Bluff Museum. 1784 Sampson County Tax List: Mary Williamson – 150 acres.

7. 1840 and 1850 US Censuses of Sampson County.

8. 1820, 1830 and 1840 US Censuses of Sampson County.

9. 1850 US Census of Sampson County.

10. Much of the data for Lewis Williamson were obtained from Arnold McRae, deceased, of Montgomery, AL. and from Dan Williamson, Denham Springs, LA. Lewis and Elizabeth were in MS by 1818. His LW&T was dated December 22, 1845. He was enumerated in Marion County, MS in the 1820 and 1830 US Censuses of Marion County and in Lawrence County in 1840. Elizabeth was head of Household in the 1850 Census of Lawrence County

11. Richard's LW&T (Columbus County Deed Book A, pp52/53) was dated July 9, 1841 and names wife, Alsey, daughters Airry, Selia (sic), Lucretia, Edy and Nancy. November 28, 1833, he held an estate sale, as executor of the estate of Lewis Williamson. He was enumerated in the 1800 US Census of Bladen County and the 1820, 1830 and 1840 US Censuses of Columbus County

13. Rebecca and Ephraim moved to MS with Lewis and Elizabeth. Ephraim witnessed a deed May 7, 1811 (Book A, p 74) and thus was still in Columbus County at that time. They were enumerated in the 1840 and 1850 US Censuses of Marion County, MS.

14. Isham was not mentioned in Lewis Williamson’s LW&T. He and his family are mentioned in “Nance Connections”. His LW&T, dated November 7, 1823, was found in Deed Book D, page 146. Her name and community was found in People of Columbus.

15. Williamson family lore holds that Nancy Williamson married Willis Flowers, son of Goldsborough Flowers, and moved to AL. Several Flowers researchers in Pike County, AL, do not consider Willis to be a brother of Richard, John, Luke and Goldsborough Flowers. They note his absence as an heir to Goldsborough, Sr.’s LW&T. It is interesting, however, that Nancy and John Flowers named a son William Willis Flowers. Also, a Willis Flowers, age 30-40, was listed in the 1830 US Census of Pike County, AL. The mature female of the family was age 40-50, an intriguing coincidence since Nancy was about 12 years older than Willis.

16. Data for this Willis Flowers was obtained from Bonita Robinson, a great-great-granddaughter of the “original Willis and Nancy”.

17. That Lott was a son of Lewis has not been proven. Lott was not mentioned in Lewis’s LW&T. Also, Lott Williamson purchased Lewis’s land from the “heirs” of Lewis. Was Lott not an heir? Lott was enumerated in all US Censuses of Columbus County from 1820 through 1860. The 1850 slave Schedule has him holding 15 slaves. The 1860 Slave Schedule lists 19 slaves.
